What are Solar Covers?
A solar cover is a giant piece of bubble wrap. It’s true! Well, a little more goes into it, but it’s easier to think of it that way. People always ask me, “which side do the bubbles go?” The answer is: down. The bubble side of the solar cover goes down onto the pool water and the cover floats in the pool, not draping over the sides.
Solar covers do three things:
- They attract heat to your swimming pool from the sun because usually, solar covers are made of a dark color material. The darker the color, the more heat it attracts.
- While the solar cover is on, it protects your pool water from collecting debris.
- It keeps the heat in your swimming pool from escaping.
Number 3 is very important here. While solar covers do attract heat, they work best when they are used to keep heat in your pool that you naturally obtain from the sun. You lose most of the heat you collect during the hot afternoon sun at night. So, it’s best to put the solar cover on AT NIGHT. That way, you won’t lose all that natural heat you gained during the day.
Pretty cool huh?
