Stick To One Pool Company

I have worked in the pool industry for a long time (at least for my age). I have dealt with a lot of people because I use to work at the biggest pool company in my area. I use to test water, ring up customers and just be a customer service chemical know-it-all technician person. I really didn’t have a title, I just made that up and it makes no sense. My point is I have seen a lot.

One of the things I noticed while being an employee and helping people was, the customers who had problems were always mis-informed. For instance, I had a customer who came in for a water test at the beginning of the season. She had a mesh pool cover on her inground pool and her water was green. Correction, her water was BLACK! When she brought a water sample too me, it was clearly a dark green color. It was disgusting. I was able to help her out and get her started with triple shocking the pool.

A few days later she came back and said that her pool was still green. It’s not uncommon that the first dose of shock didn’t take but it was a bit odd. Of course, we tried it again. A few more days after that she came back complaining of her pool still being green. This time I was a little more suspicious. I started asking her questions and found out that she only did a single shock both times. She also bought a 40% algaecide from another pool company. She confessed that she went to several pool companies to get opinions on what she should do. This, my friends, is a huge mistake.

This is what I told her:

It’s never a good idea to go around getting opinions from all these different pool companies. The reason is, some pool companies have different ways of doing things. Some places will tell you to triple shock a pool, other places will tell you floc. And then some places will tell you to use a algaecide. Then your neighbor peaks over the fence and tells you that he uses grandular chlorine. Even though all of these people can be right in thier own way, when you start mixing them together, nothing will work. This is why I recommend sticking to one company or one person’s way of doing things, whether it’s me or someone else. This way you get your pool clear and you can actually swim in it.

She eventually took my advice and stuck with me. She has since been my customer for 5 years, and even though I no longer work at the store, she still emails me and asks me questions.

Speaking of asking questions, I want to point out that we here at Swim University are also taking questions. Any questions you have about your pool or spa, feel free to ask.
