On June 25th, a movie called “Grown Ups” is coming to theaters. It stars Adam Sandler and friends. I have been dying to write about this ever since I saw the trailer for the movie. There is a scene in the trailer towards the end. I posted the video below. It’s at the 1:45 mark. Once you watch it, you can continue to read on…
Now that you have seen it, you know what I’m talking about. The girl tells Kevin James that they put a chemical in the pool that turns urine blue. Then all of the “Grown Ups” are surrounded by a blue dye.
FACT: This chemical DOES NOT exist.
It’s one of the most common myths surrounding swimming pools. I’m not really sure where the myth started, but if I had my guess, I would say it started on a old Nickelodeon show called “Pete and Pete” (I tried to find the clip but came up empty handed. You’ll have to just take my word for it). From that episode forward, parents have used this myth to prevent their kids from peeing in the pool. It’s a great method, using the power of embarrassment.
Now that you know the harsh truth about “that chemical that turns urine blue in the swimming pool,” it doesn’t mean you can go peeing in pools. That’s just gross!

Oh, come on! Let the myth live! As long as some people still believe in it, there’s a chance to keep the level of urine in your pool under control.
hey!
i always stand in a big group of people, pee and when it would turn blue i would just act like all the other folks, iiiieeeewwww grooooss someone peeeedd
haha just kidding..
thx for making us aware about this myth!!
In the episode The Adventures of Pete and Pete: Splashdown they pour a chemical called WeeWee See in the pool. You can find it on YouTube.
This myth has been around way longer than Nickelodeon because we were told this same thing back when I was a kid in the 1970′s and I know I told it to my little cousins in the 80′s and then my nieces and nephews in the 90′s. That myth has probably been around for as long as there have been public swimming pools and kids who pee in them. Don’t mean to shoot you down or be mean to you just adding my darn near historical perspective on this topic.
