This is a question that many people differ on. It’s really up to the pool’s owner as to what temperatures he or she wants it at. If you actually have control over your swimming pool’s heat then generally you want to keep your swimming pool between 78°- 82° F. This is the average range for swimming pool temperature. If you are older or have elderly people and children swimming in your pool you might want to keep the temperature higher at around 80° plus. Anything lower might be too cool for them.
The American Red Cross recommends a swimming pool to be at 78° for competitive swimming. If you are an intense swimmer, your body is known to generate a great amount of body heat. In air, this body heat is relieved when you sweat. When this sweat evaporates this is your body’s cooling system and it helps to control the body temperature at 98.6° F. In a swimming pool, your body creates the same exact heat, but because you are in water that sweat doesn’t get its chance to evaporate. Instead the cooling comes from the water, which is why it should be at 78°. This is roughly proportional to the temperature difference between your body and the water. The warmer the water the less heat is relieved.
