How To Remove Your Winter Pool Cover

Hooray! It’s time to open your pool for the spring and summer seasons. Opening your pool is by far easier and more exciting than closing your pool. We would like to share our procedure for removing your winter cover properly so you don’t have any accidents.

Remove A Winter Cover for Inground Pools

  1. Completely clean the cover off, meaning drain it so that NO water is left of the cover. Also do your best to get all the leaves off your cover. When we remove the cover we don’t want those leaves and debris going into your pool water.
  2. Get a friend to help you. Take one side of the cover and fold it over once. Then move to the middle and fold it over again, and maybe a third time depending how large your pool is. Now you should have a long folded cover on the side of your inground.
  3. Pull the over off the pool and onto the grass or concrete. At this point no accidents should occur. No debris or dirty water should get into your water. And if your pool is clean and blue, this should look great.

Remove A Winter Cover for Above Ground Pools

  2. Get a friend to help you. Take one side of the cover and fold it over once. Then move to the middle and fold it over again, and maybe a third time depending how large your pool is. Now you should have a long folded cover on the side of your above ground.
  3. Pull the over off the pool and onto the grass next to your pool. At this point no accidents should occur. No debris or dirty water should get into your water. And if your pool is clean and blue, this should look great.

Clean Your Cover!

Once the cover is removed off your swimming pool, if you have enough space in your yard, lay the cover out. If you don’t have enough you can fold it and clean it in sections. Ask your local pool store if they have a cover cleaning solution or if they don’t you can use car wash soap. Get a brush and rinse the cover once with water, soap up the cover and rinse again. Make sure you clean the entire cover. Let it sit out to dry in the sun and now it’s time to pack it up.

To pack it up, use a Rubbermaid trash barrel with lid or any plastic storage box with a lid and keep it in your shed or garage. The reason we recommend a hard plastic storage cause is to keep rats, mice and other vermin from chewing, making nests and destroying your cover in the summer season.
