Finding a leak in an above ground pool becomes easier the smaller your pool is, but don’t think just because you have a leak you need to go and replace the whole liner. There are vinyl liner patch kits that are made to work underwater so you don’t have to drain your whole pool or replace your entire liner. If you want to find the leak yourself without hiring a company to do then we will teach you how it’s possible.

What You Need:

A pair of goggles to see underwater
Red food coloring or Leak Finder Ink (Check your local pool supply store)

What To Do:

One really simple method I use to start off is I just let the pool drain. This is tricky because if your leak is at the bottom of the pool then it will drain all the way and we are trying to avoid that. But if you think it’s coming from the wall then by all means let it drain. When the pool stops draining then you will know it’s somewhere along the wall right where the water stops.

Now you can check the ground outside your pool for wet spots. This will help you to determine where the leak is at on the wall now that you have the height. Also if its on the bottom this will narrow it down. You want to keep narrowing it down before using the dye to find the leak so you don’t have to keep using it. Once you’ve got a pretty good area as to where the leak COULD be then we need to jump in the pool.

Once you are in the pool go to the area where you think the leak might be. Try to move slowly and not disturb the water too much. Squirt the dye in the water close to the wall. If the leak is near you will see the dye move towards the leak source like a current (pretty cool). If you suspect your leak is at the bottom of your pool, put on those goggles and do the same thing. The reason you don’t want to disturb the water is because you don’t want the dye going all over the place so be very slow and thorough.
