Sand filters are the most popular filter systems for swimming pools. They use a special filter sand called grade 20 silica sand. The reason for this sand is that it is very sharp to help seperate particles to allow for proper filtration.
Sand filters work by pushing the water down into a thick bed of sand allowing the sand to grab small particles. Once the pool water reaches the bottom of the sand bed, it is pushed out of the filter up through the standpipe. New sand will trap larger particles but as more dirt and debris get trapped in the sand bed the more that filters out finer particles.
You can backwash a sand filter very easily by just turning your sand filter's multiport valve to "backwash" this reverses the water flow by pushing the water up through the sand bed and out of the waste line.
