How to Get Rid of Algae in a Hot Tub

Algae in a hot tub is rare because most hot tubs are covered for a majority of the time. Algae, like most plants, needs sunlight to grow, and without sunlight, it makes it extremely difficult.

However, there is still a chance that algae can grow.

Common Causes of Algae Growth in Hot Tubs

Fear not, algae is very easy to cure in the hot tub. The first and most effective way to get rid of hot tub algae is by draining and refilling.

Getting Rid of Hot Tub Algae

1. Draining and Refilling

This is not the sexiest solution, but it works. Make sure to drain the hot tub completely, wipe down the interior shell, and clean your filters.

2. Shocking

Shocking is another way to say super sanitize, and super sanitize is another way of saying to add a bunch of chlorine, bromine, or whatever sanitizer you use, to kill the algae.

I do not recommend this method because it can drastically affect the chemical levels in your hot tub and cause TDS (total dissolved solids), which would force you to drain and refill anyway.

However, if you are in a pinch, this is another way to get rid of the algae.

  1. Circulate the water continuously until the algae is gone.
  2. Make sure your hot tub filters are clean.
  3. Wipe down the interior shell to break loose any algae that may be clinging to it.
  4. Check to make sure your pH is between 7.4 and 7.6.
  5. Raise your chlorine level or bromine level.

You should see the algae start to disappear. If you don’t see any change within 24 hours, either increase your sanitizer levels or drain and refill.

3. Hot Tub Algaecide

Algaecides are usually designed to prevent algae, but sometimes with enough algaecide, you can effectively kill the algae.

How to Prevent Algae from Growing in your Hot Tub

If you don’t want a problem like this to happen again, it’s as simple as just taking care of your hot tub water.

Water that is properly sanitized and balanced will not grow algae.
